We finally got to our room last night at about 8pm. After getting settled, I was too tired to send out an update. Sunny did great during surgery. They ended up transfusing her twice and I am so glad they did because she is recovering from this operation so much better than she did the first, 5 weeks ago. In fact, her hemoglobin this morning is 12.5, and she was only at 12.1 when she began surgery. So she is actually higher today than yesterday! Praise God!
Dr. Shenava was able to get both bones done this time, femur and tibia. They were not able to get the FD nail (telescoping rod that grows with the child) in the tibia b/c her canal was just too tight. They put a rush rod in, that does the same job, but eventually has to be replaced b/c the child will outgrow it.
Next month, Sunny will start Zometa and that should do wonders for her bones. Hopefully with the better nutrition she is receiving and the the addition of this drug, she will grow a bit and in about a year we can re-do this tibia and get the right one done as well. But for now, we will let her recover from this one, and then get her some serious physical therapy!
